Florida baby found dead in freezer
Detectives in southwest Florida continue investigating the death of an infant found in a freezer.
Punta Gorda police first responded to the home Sunday because of a medical call.
Jessica Smallwood, 27, was taken to a local hospital for bleeding.
After learning information from hospital officials, detectives returned to the home the next day to find the infant in the freezer, police said.
Detectives returned to the home on Tuesday and continued gathering evidence with the assistance of the Sarasota K-9 Search and Rescue. The Punta Gorda Police Department also has worked closely with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, the State Attorney’s Office, the Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Department of Children and Families.
The Charlotte County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy on the baby.
